Phenomenon - the Musical

Phenomenon: The MovieThe $100M+ grossing hit film, "Phenomenon," starring John Travolta, Robert Duvall, Forest Whitaker and Kyra Sedgwick, is currently being developed into a Broadway stage musical by the film’s renowned producer Michael Taylor and Spencer Proffer. Taylor and Proffer are in advanced negotiations with a top line New York stage producer and production company to bring this to fruition. Screenwriter Gerald DiPego will work closely with the producers, book and libretto writer to insure continuity of characters and spirit.

With the success of current series such as "Heroes" and the phenomenon of the DVD and book “The Secret,” the interest in these types of stories is very high and the timing is perfect. Eric Clapton’s Grammy winning performance of “Change The World” was the films’ title song. We plan to include similar poignant, intelligent songs as an integral element of the stage production.

The film was produced by Michael Taylor and Barbara Boyle. Spencer helped to architect the musical blueprint for the film and served as the music consultant. All connected to the film now plan to turn it into a Broadway musical with the proper spiritual, transcendental and magical tone that the film had. The Grammy winning "Change The World", performed by Eric Clapton and beautifully produced by Babyface was our lead song which won the Grammy in 1997. We used music to decorate the poignancy of the film. We plan to make a unique stage presentation of this timeless work, written by award winning writer, Gerald DiPego, who will consult on the writing of the book and libretto to the stage play.

PHENOMENON story overview

George Malley's life (John Travolta's character) is transformed by a strange flash of light he observes on the evening of his 37th birthday.

Over the course of the following days, George starts to experience an extraordinary form of genius-level intelligence, rapidly absorbing vast amounts of information, formulating new, revolutionary ideas, and even exhibiting telekinetic abilities.

George tries to use his new intelligence for the good of his community. At first local townsfolk are intrigued and amused by George's new abilities, but as they increase, community members gradually become afraid of him, with the only exceptions being love interest Lace Pennamin (Kyra Sedgwick), town physician Doc Brunder (Robert Duvall), and best friend Nate Pope (Forest Whitaker). Matters are complicated further when the government begins to take an interest in his newfound genius...

It is discovered that George's abilities are the result of a bizarre brain tumor.  He struggles to cope with his situation and his new life, understanding more everyday, but ultimately the tumor takes his life ~ in the process opening up a whole new world of hope and understanding and wonder to everyone his life touched.
