Bios Judith A. Proffer
As former Publisher and Associate Publisher of leading newspapers LA Weekly and OC Weekly, Proffer spearheaded some of the most dynamic and successful issues in alternative newsweekly publishing history during her nearly twenty year career in that orbit. She launched the lauded OC Weekly, sat on the Association of Alternative Newsweekly Board of Directors, was named Associate Publisher/West Coast for Stern Publishing (parent company of Village Voice) and created an impressive series of events in the community benefiting a myriad of non-profits locally and abroad. Judy has been honored by the Los Angeles Business Journal and the San Fernando Valley Business Journal as one of the leading “Women Who Make A Difference” in the Southern California Community. Additionally, Judy was honored by Friends of The Family for her charitable endeavors. As President and CEO of Magpye Media, Judy produced a weekly topical radio show, progressive musical theatre and deployed her vast knowledge of the alternative newsweekly world by offering consulting services to papers in need of a little spit and polish. Co-founder of the acclaimed Southern California Sun Community Newspapers, as Executive Editor Judy created three unique publications to serve the Valley communities: Studio City Sun, Sherman Oaks Sun and Encino Sun. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s presence at the ribbon cutting ceremony signaled the significance of the Sun’s influence on otherwise underserved communities. In addition to her other notable achievements, Judy is the co-writer of “Art of the Soul,” the title song recorded by Anna Nalick for the Maya Angelou narrated documentary “As Seen Through These Eyes.” The moving film premiered on Sundance Channel in fall 2008 and premiered in New York and Los Angeles in fall 2009. The DVD was released early 2010. She also co-wrote "Here We Are" for Special Olympics. An avid photographer (her photos of Quincy Jones and KISS have appeared on cd and dvd packaging), Judy’s image of a Nashville storm taken during the June 2009 CMT Awards was among the best travel photos of 2009, as selected by the Los Angeles Times. Judy launched her Huqua Press boutique book publishing company ("Small Press, Big Ideas") with The Supernatural Kids Cookbook in spring 2011. Additionally, she and Nancy Mehagian co-wrote 25 Lessons: What We Learned from Oprah, published in fall 2011. Huqua Press published The Supernatural Kids Cookbook Special 11/11/11 edition and The Sweet and Savory Cookbook in November and December, respectively, to round out the debut year. Titles on tap for 2012 are books that inspire and illuminate, focusing on culinary, self-improvement, children and culture. You can reach Judy at (818) 981-5262 or judy@meteor17.com.
